Do Wearable Body Cameras Get Results?

The U.S. Justice Department’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) issued an important study on wearable body cameras last fall.

Implementing a Body-Worn Camera Program: Recommendations and Lessons Learned highlights the positive outcomes of a deployment by the Mesa (Ariz.) Police Department.

Among the results:

  • Eight months after the camera deployment, there were nearly three times as many complaints against officers without cameras as against those with cameras.
  • Officers with cameras had 40 percent fewer total complaints during the pilot program, and 75 percent fewer use-of-force complaints.
